Installation details for free-fall lifeboats

1. Primary Installation Location: Stern of the Vessel

The most common installation position for free-fall lifeboats is the stern of cargo ships, particularly on aft-engine vessels. This arrangement allows the lifeboat to descend directly into the water without interference from the ship's superstructure or propellers. A sloped ramp (angled at 30°-35° from horizontal) is required for installation, guiding the lifeboat along its trajectory during free fall. The lifeboat is positioned with its bow facing the stern, and occupants sit facing the ship's bow to withstand impact forces upon water entry.

2. Height and Clearance Requirements

• The lowest point of the lifeboat must be positioned above the ship's lightest draft to ensure the hull does not make contact with the vessel during descent.
• The ramp design ensures the lifeboat follows a parabolic trajectory and enters the water at an angle of 50°-60°, minimizing submersion depth and maximizing stability.

3. Safety Distances and Obstacle Avoidance

• Propeller Clearance: For ships exceeding 120 meters in length, lifeboats must be installed at least 1.5 times the lifeboat's length ahead of the propeller to prevent entanglement or damage during deployment.
• Hazardous Area Avoidance: On oil tankers or vessels carrying dangerous cargo, lifeboats are positioned away from cargo tanks to reduce risks of fire or explosion.
