        An open lifeboat is a type of lifeboat without a fixed canopy. Here is an overview:

Features

       • Simple structure: It lacks complex features like a closed canopy, making its construction relatively straightforward.
       • Easy boarding: In emergencies, crew members can quickly board the boat.
       • Poor protection: Without shelter, occupants are vulnerable to waves, strong winds, and intense sunlight; during rough seas, water can easily enter the boat, and waves of force 4-5 or higher may cause occupants to be hit by waves; if overturned by waves, it's difficult for the occupants to right the boat on their own; in cold conditions or under intense sun, occupants may face risks such as hypothermia, heatstroke, or even death.

Power types

        • Paddled: Early models were often powered by human paddling, suitable for small lifeboats and short-distance escapes.
       • Motorized: Some are equipped with compression ignition engines as auxiliary power. When manual paddling becomes difficult, the engine provides extra power, increasing speed and maneuverability, making it easier to find safe locations or approach rescue vessels. These are divided into first-class motorized lifeboats (with speeds no less than 6 knots) and second-class motorized lifeboats (with speeds no less than 4 knots).

Current usage

       Widely used on various ships in the past. However, due to inadequate safety protection, as safety regulations have become stricter, new international voyaging ships no longer use them according to the 1983 amendment of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. They have gradually been replaced by fully enclosed or semi-enclosed lifeboats since July 1, 1991. Nonetheless, non-international voyaging ships and some older ships may still use them.
