A marine oily water separator is utilized to treat oil-contaminated bilge water, ensuring compliance with the discharge standards outlined in IMO Resolution 107(49). It consists of a 15ppm bilge water separator along with an alarm and automatic shutdown device.

The Oil-Water Separator (OWS) has three key components:

1. Separation Device:
   - Uses baffles for oil to rise into the collection chamber.
   - Control valve releases separated oil to the OWS sludge tank.
   - Optional heater for smooth separation.

2. Filtration Device:
   - Three stages: filtration, coalescer, and collection chamber.
   - Removes impurities; output must be <15 ppm to meet standards.

3. Monitoring and Control Device:
   - Monitors oil ppm with the Oil Content Monitor (OCM).
   - Control unit prevents overflow with three-way solenoid valves.
   - Valves direct discharge overboard or to the OWS sludge tank during alarms.



The main purpose of an oil/water separator is to separate hydrocarbons from the oil/water coming from the ship's bilge and provide cleaner wastewater which can be discharged overboard in accordance with IMO MEPC 107(49) regulations.
